What is a stop-limit order and how do I use it?

Last updated:

A stop-limit order waits until the market trades at your stop price, then places a limit order at your limit price. Traders use it to limit a loss or to buy when the price breaks out.

How does it work?

  1. You set a stop price, a limit price and an amount.
  2. Until the stop price is reached, the order waits and is not in the order book. The funds for it are reserved.
  3. When a trade on the pair happens at or past your stop price, a limit order at your limit price is placed.
  4. That limit order then fills like any other limit order, or waits in the book.

How do I place a stop-limit order?

  1. Open the pair on the trading page.
  2. Choose Buy or Sell and the Stop-limit tab.
  3. Enter the stop price, the limit price and the amount.
  4. Place the order and check it in Open orders.

Examples

  • Stop loss on a sell: you hold a coin at 100. You set a sell stop at 90 and a limit at 89. If the price falls to 90, a sell limit order at 89 is placed.
  • Breakout buy: the price is 100. You set a buy stop at 110 and a limit at 111. If the price rises to 110, a buy limit order at 111 is placed.

Why was my stop-limit order rejected?

  • The stop price is equal to the current market price. Choose a stop above or below it.
  • The limit price is too far from the stop price. Each pair only allows a limit price within a set percentage of the stop price.
  • The amount is outside the pair's minimum or maximum.

A stop-limit order is not guaranteed to fill. If the price moves past your limit price quickly, the limit order can stay open without filling. A small gap between stop and limit makes this more likely.
