Spot trading: order types, the order book and fees
Last updated:
In spot trading you buy and sell coins at the current market price and own them straight away. Open any pair from Markets or the trading page.
Order types
- Limit: buy or sell at a price you choose or better. The order waits in the order book until it fills or you cancel it.
- Market: buy or sell immediately at the best available prices. You can enter the amount of the coin or the total you want to spend.
- Stop-limit: when the market reaches your stop price, a limit order at your limit price is placed. Useful to limit losses or to buy on a breakout.
The order book
The order book lists open buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks). The gap between the best bid and the best ask is the spread. Recent trades and the depth chart show where the market is moving.
Fees: maker and taker
A maker adds an order to the book (for example a limit order that does not fill at once). A taker fills an order that is already there (for example a market order). Each pair has its own maker and taker fee, shown on the trading page.
- When you buy, the fee is taken from the coin you receive.
- When you sell, the fee is taken from the amount you receive (for example USDT).
Price and size limits
To protect you from typing mistakes, each pair has a minimum and maximum order size, and a limit price can only be a certain percentage away from the market price. Market orders are priced with a small slippage allowance.
Favourites, history and alerts
Star a pair to add it to your favourites. Your open orders, order history and trade history are in Orders. You can also set price alerts on a pair.
FAQ
Why was my limit price not accepted?
Each pair only accepts limit prices within a set percentage of the market price, and orders within the pair's minimum and maximum size.
Where do I see the fee for a pair?
On the pair's trading page, before you place the order.
