What is a market order?
Last updated:
A market order buys or sells straight away at the best prices available in the order book. You choose how much, not the price.
How do I place a market order?
- Open the pair on the trading page.
- Choose Buy or Sell and the Market tab.
- Enter the amount of the coin, or the total you want to spend or receive in the quote coin (for example USDT).
- Place the order.
What price will I get?
Your order fills against the open orders in the book, starting with the best price. A large order can fill at several prices, so the average price can be different from the last price you saw.
To protect you, each pair has a slippage allowance: the order can only fill up to a set percentage away from the market price. Any part that cannot fill within that range is not traded and the unused funds are returned to your wallet.
What if my market order is not filled?
If there are not enough orders within the allowed range, the order fills partly or not at all. You get a notification, and the amount that was not used goes back to your available balance. It does not stay open in the order book.
Market order fees
A market order takes liquidity from the book, so it pays the taker fee for the pair, shown on the trading page. When you buy, the fee is taken from the coin you receive; when you sell, from the quote coin you receive. See spot trading fees.
When should I use a market order?
- When getting the trade done now matters more than the exact price.
- On pairs with a busy order book, where the price you get is close to the last price.
- Avoid large market orders on quiet pairs; use a limit order instead.
Each pair has a minimum and maximum order amount. A market order outside them is rejected.
