Why was my futures position liquidated?

Last updated:

A position is liquidated when your margin ratio reaches 100%: your margin balance no longer covers the maintenance margin the position needs. The position is then closed at market and its open orders on that pair are cancelled.

The most common reasons

  • The mark price reached your liquidation price. Liquidation uses the mark price, not the last price, so it can happen without the last price touching your liquidation price.
  • High leverage. With high leverage a small move is enough to use up the margin.
  • Cross mode. Your cross positions share one balance. A loss on one position, or many positions at once, can push the whole account to 100%, and then all cross positions are closed.
  • Funding fees and fees. Funding fees are taken from your Futures wallet every funding interval, which slowly lowers your margin balance.
  • A bigger tier. Adding to a position can move it into a tier with a higher maintenance margin rate. The tiers are on Trading rules.
  • Removed margin. Taking margin out of an isolated position moves the liquidation price closer.

Did I get a warning?

Xoibit sends a warning notification when your margin ratio reaches 80%. Fast price moves can go from the warning to liquidation very quickly, so do not rely on the warning alone.

Where can I see what happened?

  • Position History on the futures page shows the closed position.
  • Transactions shows the liquidation, realized PnL, fees and funding fees.
  • Trade history shows the trades that closed the position.

Can I lose more than I had?

No. Your loss can never be more than your Futures wallet balance, so your balance does not go negative.

A liquidation cannot be reversed. To avoid the next one, use lower leverage, isolated margin for risky trades, and a stop loss that triggers before your liquidation price.

SSS

The chart never reached my liquidation price. Why was I liquidated?

Liquidation uses the mark price, which is based on the index price and the last price. The chart usually shows the last price.

Why were all my positions closed?

They were in cross mode. When a cross liquidation happens, all cross positions are closed.

Can I get my liquidated funds back?

No. A liquidation is a closed trade, the same as closing the position yourself at that price.
