What is funding rate in perpetual futures?

The funding rate is a percentage used to calculate the funding fee on perpetual futures. A funding fee is charged every funding interval, calculated from the position value at mark price times the funding rate, and taken from your Futures wallet.
Why do perpetual futures have funding?
Perpetual futures never expire. Funding is the mechanism that keeps the futures price close to the price of the coin over time, so it applies to positions that are held across a funding time.
How is the funding fee calculated?
Funding fee = position value at mark price x funding rate. For example, a position worth 1,000 USDT at mark price with a funding rate of 0.01% has a funding fee of 0.1 USDT. These are example numbers; the real rate is shown on the trading page.
When is funding charged?
The funding interval is set per pair. The futures trading page shows the current funding rate and a countdown to the next funding time. Only positions that are open at the funding time are affected.
Where can I see my funding fees?
Each funding fee is recorded as Funding fee in Transactions, with the pair and the amount.
Funding fees reduce the margin balance of your positions. If you hold a large position for a long time, funding can add up and move you closer to liquidation, especially in cross mode.
How can I pay less funding?
- Check the funding rate and countdown on the trading page before you hold a position through a funding time.
- Close or reduce the position before the funding time if you do not want to be charged.
- Remember that a smaller position value means a smaller fee.
