Futures trading rules explained: limits, tiers and margin
Last updated:
The Trading rules page lists the limits for every futures pair. It has two tabs: Trading Rules for order limits and fees, and Leverage & Margin for the leverage tiers. If an order is rejected, this is the first place to check.
Trading Rules tab
Search for a symbol to see its row:
- Min / max order amount: the smallest and largest single order, in the base coin.
- Min / max price %: how far below or above the market price a limit price can be.
- Min / max stop price %: the allowed band for stop-limit orders.
- Maker / taker fee: the fee rates for the pair. See futures trading fees.
- Cap / floor: limit prices must also stay within this range around the mark price.
- Max open orders: how many open orders you can have.
Leverage & Margin tab
Choose a symbol to see its tiers. Each tier has:
- Position bracket: the range of position value the tier covers.
- Max leverage: the highest leverage allowed for positions in that bracket.
- Maintenance margin rate and maintenance amount: used to calculate the margin a position needs to stay open.
The page also shows the two formulas used:
- Initial margin = notional position value / leverage.
- Maintenance margin = notional position value x maintenance margin rate - maintenance amount.
Why do the tiers matter?
A bigger position falls into a higher bracket, which allows less leverage and needs a higher maintenance margin rate. That brings the liquidation price closer. If your order would push a position beyond what the tiers allow at your leverage, it is rejected with "Max position size is exceeded".
Can the rules change?
Yes. The page shows when the rules were last updated. In extreme price moves, or when the price moves far from the index, Xoibit may adjust the maximum leverage, the brackets and the maintenance margin rates.
Some pairs also have a minimum holding time before a position can be closed or reduced. If it applies, the error message tells you how many minutes are left.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Where do I find the maximum leverage for a pair?
On the Leverage & Margin tab of Trading rules. The first tier has the highest leverage.
Why was my limit order price refused?
It was outside the min/max price % around the market price, or outside the cap and floor around the mark price.
