Can I hold a long and a short position at the same time?
Last updated:
No, not on the same pair. Xoibit futures use one-way mode: you have one position per pair, either long or short. An order in the opposite direction reduces, closes or flips that position instead of opening a second one.
What happens when I place an opposite order?
Say you hold a long position of 1 BTC on a BTC/USDT pair:
- Sell 0.4 BTC: your long becomes 0.6 BTC.
- Sell 1 BTC: your long is closed.
- Sell 1.5 BTC: your long is closed and a short of 0.5 BTC is opened.
The part that closes your position realizes PnL. The part that opens a new position needs margin like any new position.
How do I avoid flipping by mistake?
Tick Reduce Only on closing orders. A reduce-only order can only make your position smaller, so it never opens a position in the other direction. See what reduce-only means.
Can I be long on one pair and short on another?
Yes. Each pair has its own position, so you can be long BTC and short ETH at the same time. Each pair also has its own leverage and margin mode.
Hedge mode (separate long and short positions on the same pair) is not available. If you want to protect a long position, use a stop loss or reduce it, rather than trying to open a short on the same pair.
Preguntas frecuentes
Why did my short close my long?
Because positions are one-way. A sell order on a pair where you are long reduces or closes the long.
Is there a hedge mode?
No. Each pair holds one position in one direction.
